It's not news that Healthcare costs across many countries is barely managing to cover it's costs.  The Economist Intelligience Unit has recently produced a report based on interviews with 28 healthcare experts including clinicians, healthcare providers, academics, patients reps, payers, policymakers and suppliers.  They also surveyed the data and literature available on Europe's healthcare systems.   Each expert was asked to give their hopes, fears and predictions for healthcare in 2030.  The main driver of rising healthcare costs are a) ageing population and related rise in chronic disease; b) costly technological advances; c) patient demand driven by increased knowledge of options and by less healthy lifestyle; d) legacy priorities and financing structures that are not suited to to-day's requirements.  The report says the future of healthcare will be shaped by 7 separate but linked trends...1 Healthcare spending will continue to rise not just due to inflation but also because improved healthcare is linked to economic growth; 2 Keeping the universal healthcare model will require rationing of services and consolidation of healthcare facilities; 3 General physicians will become more important as gatekeepers to the system and co ordinators of treamtent; 4 More effective preventative measures and fundamental lifestyle changes will be promoted; 5 European governments will need to find a way to improve collection and transparency of health data so funding can be prioritised; 6 Patients will need to take more responsibility for their own health, treatment and care and 7 Governments will need to tackle bureaucracy and liberalise role of healthcare professionals ...
